    How to use the deck board and joist calculator

    1. Enter the rectangular deck length in the direction the boards will run, then the depth across the board rows.
    2. Enter the actual board face width, planned gap, purchasable stock length, and visible waste allowance.
    3. Enter an approved joist spacing and purchasable joist length. The calculator never selects structural spacing for you.
    4. Use the row and joist-line counts for layout, then review aggregate stock pieces against a real cut plan.

    Formula

    board pitch = actual board width + gap
    exact rows = (deck depth + gap) ÷ board pitch
    whole rows = round exact rows up
    board running length = whole rows × deck length
    stock boards = round (running length × waste factor ÷ stock length) up
    joist spaces = round (deck length ÷ entered spacing) up
    joist lines = joist spaces + 1
    joist running length = joist lines × deck depth

    Board and joist stock pieces use aggregate running length. They are planning quantities, not a cut list.

    Worked example

    For a 12 ft × 10 ft deck, 5.5 in boards with 0.25 in gaps require 21 rows. Those rows contain 252 linear ft before waste. With 10% waste, 277.2 linear ft divided by 12 ft stock equals 23.1 boards and rounds to 24.

    At an explicitly entered 16 in on-center spacing along the 12 ft length, there are 9 spaces and 10 joist lines. Ten 10 ft joists contain 100 linear ft; divided by 12 ft stock, the aggregate equivalent rounds to 9 pieces before any joist waste.

    This calculator does not design a deck. It does not select joist size or spacing; verify those inputs from a qualified design, current code requirements, and the exact decking instructions.

    It excludes beams, rim boards, ledgers, blocking, posts, footings, stairs, rails, fascia, fasteners, clips, connections, picture frames, breaker boards, diagonal layouts, openings, curves, cantilevers, delivery, tax, labor, and permit requirements. Aggregate stock assumes useful cut planning; actual lengths and joints can require more pieces.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does 16 inches on center work for every deck?

    No. Enter only spacing established by the structural design and the exact decking manufacturer's current installation instructions.

    Why can a cut list need more boards than the stock result?

    The calculator divides total running length by stock length. Required joints, stagger, supported ends, defect removal, and unusable offcuts can add pieces.

    Where are beams, posts, and footings?

    They require a structural layout. Use the Post Hole Concrete calculator only after the approved footing dimensions and count are known.
