How to use the paint calculator
- Choose a complete rectangular room or an explicit list of rectangular wall faces. Use separate calculations for geometry that cannot be represented honestly by those shapes.
- Enter one project dimension unit, then measure every door and window you want subtracted. Calculate My Project never inserts hidden standard opening sizes.
- Decide whether the rectangular room ceiling is included. Ceiling finish remains a separate product and is unavailable in explicit-wall mode.
- Enter the actual coat count, coverage, and container volume for the wall finish. Add its container price only when a cost estimate is useful.
- When selected, provide separate product facts for ceiling finish and primer. Do not reuse coverage merely because two products share a nominal gallon size.
- Review the exact liquid, exact decimal containers, rounded whole containers, nominal leftover, and cost as distinct results.
Formula and calculation order
Every dimension is normalized to meters. Coverage is normalized to square meters per cubic meter, so US and metric product labels enter one calculation path.
room wall area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height
explicit wall area = sum(width × height × quantity)
opening area = sum(width × height × quantity)
net wall area = gross wall area − opening area
adjusted surface area = net surface area × (1 + waste percent ÷ 100)
coated area = adjusted surface area × product coats
exact liquid = coated area ÷ product coverage
exact containers = exact liquid ÷ container volume
purchase containers = round exact containers up
nominal leftover = purchased liquid − exact liquid
product cost = whole containers × entered price per container
Primer uses the sum of adjusted selected wall and ceiling areas, then its own coats, coverage, container size, rounding, and optional price. Primer volume is never added to finish-paint volume as though the products were interchangeable.
Independently verified worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 ft² of gross wall area. One 3 ft × 7 ft door and two 3 ft × 4 ft windows subtract 45 ft², leaving 307 ft² of paintable wall.
A 10% allowance produces 337.7 ft² of adjusted wall area. Two wall-finish coats create 675.4 ft² of coated area. At 350 ft² per US gallon, the exact requirement is 1.9297142857… gal; two 1-gal containers leave 0.0702857143… nominal gallons. At $42.50 per container, wall finish costs $85.00.
The 120 ft² ceiling becomes 132 ft² after allowance. One coat at 400 ft²/gal requires exactly 0.33 gal and one container, costing $39.00 at the entered price.
Primer covers 337.7 + 132 = 469.7 ft². One coat at 300 ft²/gal requires 1.5656666667… gal and two containers, costing $64.00. Total priced material is $188.00. Each of those product results has its own purchase ceiling.
Product assumptions and sources
Sherwin-Williams describes typical gallon coverage as a range and warns that application method and surface type or condition affect requirements. Lowe's current planning flow separates room dimensions, doors, windows, ceilings, primer, finish paint, and editable coverage assumptions. Common estimating mistakes
- Multiplying floor area by wall height instead of using the room perimeter or measured wall faces.
- Subtracting guessed “standard” doors and windows instead of measured opening area.
- Forgetting that coat count multiplies coverage demand, not container count after rounding.
- Treating wall paint, ceiling paint, and primer as one interchangeable liquid total.
- Using a generic coverage number even though product, surface, color, preparation, and application method differ.
- Rounding gallons before dividing by the actual container volume or pricing exact gallons when only whole containers can be purchased.
Limitations
Version 1 supports rectangular rooms, rectangular wall faces, a rectangular room ceiling, and rectangular openings. Sloped, vaulted, curved, stairwell, trim, cabinet, built-in, and irregular surfaces require measured decomposition or a different tool.
Coverage is nominal. Porosity, texture, repairs, preparation, color change, tint base, spray or roller loss, technique, and product instructions can change actual use. The displayed leftover is nominal container volume above the estimate, not guaranteed usable paint.
Primer, wall finish, and ceiling finish are quantity groups, not compatibility recommendations. The calculator does not select coating chemistry, sheen, preparation, ventilation, drying schedule, or safe lead, asbestos, or mold work.
Costs exclude tax, tinting differences, delivery, supplies, labor, equipment, local package availability, and return restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is product coverage required?
Coverage is the link between coated surface area and liquid volume. It varies by product and conditions, so a hidden universal value would make the result look more certain than the evidence supports.
Why are primer and finish shown separately?
They may have different coats, coverage, container sizes, prices, and purposes. Each product must reach its own whole-container purchase quantity.
Does waste apply once or once per coat?
The selected allowance is applied to measured net area before coats. Multiplying that adjusted area by coat count makes the order visible without rounding an intermediate value.
Can openings equal the entire wall area?
Yes. Openings may equal but cannot exceed gross wall area. That produces zero wall-finish demand; a selected ceiling or primer surface can still have a separate result.
Can I calculate only selected walls?
Yes. Choose explicit wall list and enter one to ten rectangular wall groups. A ceiling is not inferred in that mode.
Does the total cost include products with blank prices?
No. Each entered price uses that product's whole container count. Products with blank prices remain in quantity results and are omitted from the priced total.
