    Method and guidance

    How to use the concrete slab calculator

    1. Measure the inside length and width of the forms where concrete will actually be placed.
    2. Enter the uniform finished concrete thickness separately and select its unit.
    3. Review the waste allowance. Ten percent is a transparent starting point, not a rule for every pour.
    4. Check the mixed-volume yield printed on the exact concrete product you plan to buy, then edit or clear the bag-yield field.
    5. Add a price per bag only if you want a material-cost estimate.

    Formula and calculation order

    All dimensions are first converted to meters. Calculate My Project then calculates exact volume before applying waste, package rounding, or display formatting.

    exact volume = length × width × thickness
    waste volume = exact volume × (waste percentage ÷ 100)
    volume including waste = exact volume + waste volume
    exact bags = volume including waste ÷ mixed yield per bag
    purchase bags = round exact bags up to the next whole bag
    estimated cost = purchase bags × price per bag

    Display rounding never feeds back into bag count or cost. The whole-bag operation is the only purchasing round-up.

    Independently verified worked example

    A 20 ft × 12 ft slab at 4 in thick has an exact volume of 80 ft³, or 2.962962… yd³. With a 10% allowance, the requirement becomes 88 ft³, or 3.259259… yd³.

    At an entered yield of 0.6 ft³ per bag, the exact requirement is 146.666… bags. Purchasing rounds that to 147 bags, leaving an estimated 0.2 ft³ after whole-bag rounding. At $6.25 per bag, the material estimate is $918.75 before tax or delivery.

    These values are hard-coded as the golden test vector; the expected answers are not generated by the calculator implementation under test.

    The 0.6 ft³ preset represents the approximate mixed yield published for a specific QUIKRETE 80 lb concrete mix. Yields vary by product, mixing, waste, and site conditions, so the field is editable and the label on your chosen product controls. Read the QUIKRETE technical data sheet (manufacturer source).

    Common estimating mistakes

    • Using excavation depth instead of finished concrete thickness.
    • Mixing feet and inches without selecting the matching unit.
    • Treating a nominal bag weight as its mixed-volume yield.
    • Rounding cubic yards before calculating bags.
    • Assuming a flat subgrade when the actual base varies.
    • Forgetting that delivery minimums, short-load fees, reinforcement, forms, base material, tools, tax, and labor are separate.

    Limitations

    This calculator estimates a single rectangular slab with uniform thickness. It does not design the slab, determine compressive strength, specify reinforcement, evaluate soil or drainage, account for thickened edges, or verify building-code requirements. Break irregular or stepped slabs into separately measured volumes and consult a qualified professional where structural or code decisions are involved.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should I order the exact calculated cubic yards?

    The exact value describes geometric volume. The waste-adjusted value includes your selected planning allowance. Ready-mix suppliers may have ordering increments, minimum loads, or their own recommended allowance, so confirm the final order with the supplier.

    Why does the bag count always round up?

    Bags are purchasable only as whole packages. Calculate My Project preserves the decimal requirement, then rounds up once to show how many complete bags must be purchased.

    Is every 80 lb concrete bag equal to 0.6 cubic feet?

    No. The preset is tied to a cited product specification and remains editable. Use the mixed-yield statement for the exact product you will buy.

    Can I use this result for ready-mix concrete?

    Yes, the waste-adjusted cubic-yard or cubic-meter volume is useful for supplier discussions. The bag section is optional and can be cleared. Supplier batching and delivery policies remain outside this calculation.

    Does the estimate include a gravel base or reinforcement?

    No. It estimates concrete only. Base material, vapor barriers, reinforcement, forms, joints, tools, delivery, labor, and permits are separate project decisions.
