    Method and guidance

    How to use the mulch and soil calculator

    1. Divide the project into rectangles and circles. Add up to 20 areas that will receive the same material at the same finished depth.
    2. Measure each rectangle’s length and width or each circle’s full diameter. Use one horizontal unit for every area in this calculation.
    3. Enter the finished application depth separately. If parts of the project use different depths, run a separate calculation for each depth.
    4. Leave the waste allowance at 0% unless you want to add an explicit allowance for contours, uncertain measurements, settlement, or handling loss.
    5. For bags, enter the usable volume printed on the exact product. Add the bag price only if you want a whole-bag cost.
    6. For bulk material, enter the supplier’s price per cubic yard or cubic meter. Confirm its minimum order, increments, tax, and delivery separately.

    Formula and calculation order

    Calculate My Project converts dimensions to meters, calculates each shape’s exact area, adds the areas, multiplies once by the shared application depth, and then applies the selected allowance. Purchasing never uses a rounded display value.

    exact volume = total area × application depth
    volume including waste = exact volume × (1 + waste percent ÷ 100)
    exact bags = volume including waste ÷ entered volume per bag
    purchase bags = round exact bags up to the next whole bag
    bag cost = purchase bags × entered price per bag
    bulk cost = exact volume including waste × entered price per bulk unit

    Circle calculations use a documented 50-digit value of π. Exact bag requirements remain decimal, whole bags round up once, and bulk volume is not rounded to an invented supplier increment.

    Independently verified worked example

    A 20 ft × 10 ft rectangle has 200 ft² of area. A 10 ft diameter circle has 25π ft², or 78.5398163… ft². Together they contain 278.5398163… ft².

    At a 3 in depth, exact material volume is 69.6349541… ft³. A 10% allowance produces 76.5984495… ft³, equal to 2.8369796… yd³ or 2.1690265… m³.

    With an entered 2 ft³ bag size, the exact requirement is 38.2992247… bags. Purchase quantity rounds once to 39 bags, leaving an estimated 1.4015505… ft³ after whole-bag rounding. At $4.50 per bag, the bag estimate is $175.50.

    At an entered bulk price of $45 per yd³, exact-volume material cost is $127.6640824… before supplier minimums, delivery, or tax. The displayed comparison does not claim which purchasing method will produce the lower final invoice.

    Material assumptions and sources

    Retail calculators from Home Depot and Lowe’s accept project dimensions, depth, and product purchasing information.     Common estimating mistakes

    • Measuring a curved bed as one oversized rectangle instead of splitting it into reasonable rectangles and circles.
    • Using radius where the calculator requests the full circle diameter.
    • Mixing feet and yards across areas while one horizontal unit is selected for the whole calculation.
    • Using excavation depth instead of the finished material depth, especially when existing material remains in place.
    • Assuming every bag has the same volume or using bag weight as though it were cubic volume.
    • Rounding each area or cubic-foot result before the project total and whole-bag step.
    • Comparing bag and bulk material costs without adding the supplier’s actual delivery, tax, minimum order, or unused-material consequences.

    Limitations

    This version models flat rectangles and circles at one uniform application depth. Irregular beds require decomposition or separate calculations. It does not subtract tree trunks, rocks, planters, paths, borders, or other obstructions automatically.

    Slopes, settled grade, compaction, moisture, contours, existing material, and installation practices can change the real quantity. The editable waste allowance is only the user’s planning choice; it is not a hidden compaction or horticultural factor.

    The result estimates material quantity, not whether mulch, topsoil, compost, or another product is suitable. Confirm plant safety, drainage, soil chemistry, application depth, product coverage, and installation instructions with the product source or a qualified local professional.

    Bulk cost uses exact calculated volume. It does not create a supplier order or round to a half-yard, full-yard, truckload, or delivery minimum because those terms vary.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should I use the mulch depth recommended online?

    Use the depth appropriate for the actual product, plantings, existing grade, and project purpose. Published guidance varies, so Calculate My Project requires you to enter the depth instead of selecting one silently.

    How do I enter an irregular garden bed?

    Divide it into reasonable rectangles and circles, add those areas, and treat the result as an estimate. For a shape that cannot be approximated responsibly, measure it with a more suitable method before calculating volume.

    Is the circle field radius or diameter?

    Diameter. Measure across the full circle through its center. The formula divides that value by two internally to obtain the radius.

    Why is there no default bag size?

    Bag volume is a product fact. Retail products use different package volumes and coverage statements, so entering the exact label value avoids a confidently wrong purchase count.

    Why is the bag purchase quantity higher than the exact bag count?

    The exact decimal requirement is preserved first. Bags are then treated as whole purchasable packages, so only the purchase quantity rounds up; the resulting estimated leftover is shown separately.

    Does the bulk estimate tell me what the supplier will charge?

    It shows exact calculated volume × your entered unit price. A supplier may impose order increments, minimum quantities, delivery zones, fees, and tax. Confirm those terms before ordering.

    Is bag or bulk always cheaper?

    No. When both prices are entered, the comparison covers material cost on the stated bases only. Delivery, minimum orders, leftovers, transport, labor, and local pricing can reverse the apparent difference.
