How to use the gravel driveway calculator
- Measure the rectangular driveway length and width. Split curved or differently sized sections into separate calculations rather than hiding a rough shape assumption.
- Enter the finished compacted depth established for the project. This calculator estimates quantity from that depth; it does not design the layer.
- Enter a compaction allowance only when you have a reasonable loose-to-finished planning basis. The neutral starting value is 0%.
- Enter any additional waste allowance separately. Waste is applied after compaction, making the compounded sequence visible.
- Ask the supplier for loose bulk density and select the matching unit. Density is required because gravel is purchased by weight in many markets and no universal tons-per-yard factor exists.
- Add an optional price per US short ton or metric tonne and an optional truck payload capacity when those estimates are useful.
Formula and calculation order
Calculate My Project converts all dimensions to meters, calculates the finished compacted layer, then adds loose-volume allowances in order. Only after purchase volume is complete does the entered loose density convert volume to weight.
surface area = length × width
finished compacted volume = surface area × finished depth
compaction volume = finished volume × compaction percent ÷ 100
loose volume = finished volume + compaction volume
waste volume = loose volume × waste percent ÷ 100
purchase volume = loose volume + waste volume
purchase mass = purchase volume × entered loose bulk density
estimated cost = exact mass in selected ton unit × price per ton
exact truckloads = purchase mass ÷ entered payload capacity
whole truckloads = round exact truckloads up
A 10% compaction allowance followed by 5% waste produces 1.10 × 1.05 = 1.155 times finished volume. The formula does not collapse those steps into an unexplained 15% allowance.
Independently verified worked example
A 100 ft × 12 ft driveway has 1,200 ft² of surface area. At a 4 in finished depth, compacted volume is exactly 400 ft³, or 14.8148148… yd³.
A 10% compaction allowance produces 440 ft³ of loose volume. Applying 5% waste after that produces 462 ft³, or 17.1111111… yd³ and 13.082383125504 m³, to purchase.
At an entered loose bulk density of 100 lb/ft³, estimated purchase weight is 46,200 lb, equal to 23.1 US short tons or 20,955.967494 kg. At $45 per short ton, exact-mass material cost is $1,039.50.
With a 10-short-ton payload, exact transport demand is 2.31 loads and the discrete planning count rounds up once to 3. That number does not certify a legally loadable truck or route.
Material assumptions and sources
FHWA guidance documents weight-volume relationships and emphasizes that project-specific measured material properties are preferable to preliminary typical values. Separate FHWA aggregate testing reports a spread of maximum dry densities among tested aggregates. Those compacted values demonstrate variability but are not silently reused here as loose delivered density. Review FHWA aggregate testing (federal technical source).
USGS describes crushed stone as a group of commodities produced from different rock types for many uses. Common estimating mistakes
- Treating excavation depth, finished compacted depth, and loose delivered depth as interchangeable.
- Using a generic tons-per-yard value without checking aggregate, moisture, gradation, and whether the density basis is loose or compacted.
- Adding compaction and waste percentages together even though this calculator deliberately applies them sequentially.
- Pricing a rounded display tonnage instead of the preserved exact purchase mass.
- Treating truck body volume as payload mass or assuming every calculated load is legal and available.
- Ignoring crowns, shoulders, curves, drainage features, multiple layers, and changing widths that are not part of one rectangular layer.
Limitations
This version models one rectangular layer at one uniform finished compacted depth. Curves, slopes, crowns, shoulders, potholes, drainage, geotextile, subgrade correction, and separate base or surface courses require decomposition or a more detailed design.
The entered compaction allowance is only a planning input. Actual loose density, placed density, moisture, gradation, equipment, lift thickness, and achieved field compaction vary. Supplier tickets and field measurements control.
Price uses exact calculated mass and excludes supplier increments, minimum orders, delivery, tax, fees, and rejected or unused material. Truckloads use payload mass and exclude axle limits, route restrictions, loading practice, truck availability, and jobsite access.
This is a quantity estimate, not driveway design. It does not establish a structurally adequate layer, drainage, frost protection, soil correction, utility clearance, permit compliance, or safe construction method.
Frequently asked questions
What does finished compacted depth mean?
It is the intended final thickness of this gravel layer after placement and compaction. Entering loose pile depth or total excavation depth would represent a different geometry.
Why must I enter loose bulk density?
Purchase volume becomes weight only through density, and gravel density varies by material, source, gradation, moisture, and measurement basis. A supplier value matched to loose delivered material is more defensible than a hidden universal conversion.
Is compaction allowance the same as achieved compaction?
No. It is an editable quantity-planning allowance added to finished volume. It does not predict or certify field density or compaction quality.
Why do compaction and waste compound?
Waste is applied to the loose volume after the compaction allowance. This preserves the entered sequence: first enough loose material to reach the finished layer, then additional allowance on that amount.
Does price round up to a whole ton?
No. Version 1 calculates exact mass × entered unit price. Suppliers may use partial-ton rules or minimums, so confirm their actual billing basis rather than accepting an invented rounding rule.
Are the calculated truckloads safe and legal?
Not necessarily. The result divides estimated mass by your entered payload and rounds up. Vehicle rating, axle limits, road restrictions, loading, supplier policy, and site access still control.
