How to use the paver patio and walkway calculator
- Split the paved project into measurable rectangles and circles. Treat connected shapes carefully because entered perimeters are simply added.
- Enter the installed face length and width of the exact paver. The calculator intentionally does not assume a standard paver size.
- Review the visible layout recommendation, then enter the actual waste allowance you want the formula to use.
- Enter the number of pavers in one purchasable package, bundle, or layer. Use one when the supplier sells individual pavers.
- Enter project-specific compacted-base and bedding depths, plus any separate material-order overage for each layer.
- Optionally enter joint-product coverage and component prices. Compare exact demand with whole-package purchasing before ordering.
Formula and calculation order
Dimensions normalize to meters before the pure calculation runs. Exact geometric and product requirements stay separate from order allowances and package rounding.
total paved area = sum(rectangle and circle areas)
paver face area = paver length × paver width
exact pavers = total paved area ÷ paver face area
adjusted pavers = exact pavers × (1 + actual paver waste ÷ 100)
exact packages = adjusted pavers ÷ pavers per package
whole packages = round exact packages up once
layer design volume = total paved area × entered finished layer depth
layer order volume = design volume × (1 + layer overage ÷ 100)
exact joint packages = total paved area ÷ entered coverage per package
Paver-package cost uses whole packages. Base and bedding costs use their exact order volumes in the selected price unit. Joint-product cost uses whole packages. The total includes only components whose prices were entered.
Independently verified worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft rectangle has 120 ft² of paved area and 44 ft of perimeter. An 8 in × 4 in paver has a 32 in² face, or 2/9 ft², so exact coverage requires 540 pavers before waste.
With 10% actual waste, demand becomes exactly 594 pavers. At 10 pavers per package, exact demand is 59.4 packages; purchase quantity rounds once to 60 packages containing 600 pavers. Six pavers sit above the waste-adjusted requirement because of package rounding.
A 4 in compacted base uses 40 ft³ before order overage. With 10% base overage, the order volume is 44 ft³, or 1.629629… yd³. A 1 in bedding layer uses 10 ft³, or 0.370370… yd³, with no added overage.
Joint material rated for 50 ft² per package requires 2.4 packages and rounds to 3. At $25 per paver package, $60/yd³ for base, $50/yd³ for bedding, and $30 per joint-material package, the priced-component total is $1,706.296296… before display rounding.
Installation guidance and source boundaries
Belgard describes a compacted granular base commonly around 4–6 inches for pedestrian installations while emphasizing that soil, application, and design control the actual depth. It also describes a nominal 1-inch bedding layer. Review Belgard installation guidance (manufacturer guidance).

Common estimating mistakes
- Using pallet dimensions or nominal product names instead of the paver's installed face dimensions and actual pieces per package.
- Treating the layout recommendation as though it automatically replaced the separately entered waste value.
- Applying paver waste to base and bedding volumes, even though those layers have separate explicit order-overage inputs.
- Rounding pavers for each area before adding the project, then rounding packages a second time.
- Assuming summed area perimeters equal edge-restraint length when shapes share edges, contain openings, or connect.
- Using a generic joint-product coverage when coverage depends on paver size, joint width, depth, and product instructions.
Limitations
Version 1 supports independent flat rectangles and circles with one paver product. Irregular shapes require decomposition. The perimeter result adds every entered shape and does not remove shared edges or account for interior openings.
Paver face area is a conservative coverage basis: joint width does not reduce the paver count. The pattern choice does not simulate actual courses, cuts, borders, curves, mixed sizes, offcut reuse, color blends, or permeable openings.
Base and bedding entries are quantity inputs, not design recommendations. This calculator does not determine excavation, subgrade suitability, geotextile, drainage, slope, frost response, compaction procedure, edge restraint, vehicular loading, accessibility, code, or permit requirements.
Cost excludes unpriced components, delivery, supplier minimums and increments, tax, excavation, disposal, geotextile, drainage, edge restraint, sealers, tools, equipment, labor, and maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Does selecting a pattern change the actual waste value?
No. Pattern shows planning guidance. The separately entered actual paver waste percentage is the only layout allowance used in the formula.
Why does the calculator ignore joint width when counting pavers?
Product dimensions and joint conventions vary. Using the full nominal face without subtracting joints avoids claiming coverage that may not exist and creates a conservative planning estimate.
Is the perimeter an edge-restraint order quantity?
Not automatically. It is the sum of every entered shape's perimeter. Subtract shared edges, openings, building edges, or other sides that do not need restraint before using it as an order basis.
Why are layer order overages separate from paver waste?
Cuts and breakage affect pavers differently from aggregate delivery, compaction, grade variation, and handling. Keeping these inputs separate makes each assumption visible.
Does four inches of base and one inch of bedding work everywhere?
No. Those are initial form values, not universal design. Site conditions, loading, climate, local practice, and the selected system determine the assembly.
Why can the displayed total be partial?
A component enters the total only when you provide its price. Missing prices are not treated as zero, and labor and other project costs are intentionally excluded.
